Cultural Briefing
Do's
- • Respect Maori culture — it's the indigenous culture of New Zealand, not a novelty
- • Embrace the outdoors — hiking, kayaking, and rugby are central to Kiwi identity
- • Be friendly and casual — first names always, very informal culture
- • Practice the hongi (press noses) when invited — it's a respectful Maori greeting
- • Join in the "she'll be right" attitude — Kiwis are relaxed and resilient
Don'ts
- • Don't confuse NZ with Australia — Kiwis are proudly distinct
- • Don't underestimate the sun — UV levels are extreme due to the ozone layer
- • Don't take Maori taonga (treasures) or sacred sites lightly
- • Don't be late — punctuality is respected
- • Don't dispose of waste incorrectly — NZ is very environmentally conscious
